H&SCC Selection Policy: Senior Cricket

The selection process for Senior Cricket will be carried out by a Selection Committee on a weekly basis during the course of the season.  This Selection Committee will convene every Saturday evening at circa 8.00pm, or as close to this time as possible depending on circumstances.

The selection committee consists of the Captains and Vice-Captains of the 1st XI, 2nd XI, 3rd XI and Sunday Lions XI.  The Director of Cricket, Senior Coach, or Club Chairman may also be co-opted onto the Selection Committee, or consulted on selection decisions as appropriate.

If one or more members of the Selection Committee are unable to meet at the appropriate time due to external circumstances such as holidays, logistical challenges, or other unavoidable commitments, they will be consulted on selection as best possible.  Wherever possible a Captain/Vice-Captain from all sides should be present.

Sides are selected based on a number of criteria as follows:

Player Availability:

  • All players should declare their availability for the following weekend by the conclusion Saturday’s games.  Availability can be declared either in person or via a message / phone call.
  • If you are unsure of your availability for the following week this should be relayed in order for the Selection Committee to make allowances accordingly.  The Selection Committee expects all availability to be fully declared by Tuesdays to allow for confirmation of all sides.
  • Any player who doesn’t declare their availability by this point may find themselves either not selected, or selected in a lower side.
  • The Selection Committee will also consider long-term availability, and reserves the right to select sides based on continuity in cases where a player’s availability may be sporadic or inconsistent.
  • Wherever possible an appropriate member of the Selection Committee will endeavour to speak with any player demoted or not selected to outline reasons and the thought process behind that decision.
  • Wherever possible we will try to avoid players moving up or down more than one side during the course of a week.

Player Ability & Performance:

  • The Selection Committee will endeavour to select the strongest sides available, bearing in mind the balance and interests of all sides and other criteria detailed here.
  • The Selection Committee reserves the right to select a player with a view to long-term player development, and may afford a player an extended period of selection in a team if it is deemed to be in the interest of their development.

Training Attendance:

  • The Selection Committee reserves the right to consider training attendance and training performance as a factor when selecting sides.

Inclusivity:

  • Wherever possible the Selection Committee will endeavour to ensure that all available players are afforded game time over the course of a weekend.
  • If a player is not selected for any of the sides on a Saturday, the Selection Committee will endeavour to prioritise their selection on a Sunday where possible.

Outstanding Debt:

  • The Selection Committee reserves the right to not select any player who has not settled their Annual Membership by the deadline of 31st May.
  • The Selection Committee also reserves the right to not select any player who has a significant volume of outstanding Match Fees.
  • In both cases the player may be asked to settle all debts before the Selection Committee considers the player for selection.

Withdrawal Record:

  • The Selection Committee will also consider a player’s past record of withdrawal from games due to avoidable or foreseeable circumstances.  The Selection Committee reserves the right to select sides based on this record and prioritise those who have proven to be dependable and reliable in the past.
  • For avoidance of doubt, any unforeseeable or unavoidable changes in availability such as due to injury, illness, emergency, or similar matters will be considered entirely valid reasons for withdrawal.

Attitude & Behaviour:

  • The Selection Committee expects players to uphold the standards and values of the club at all times in their on and off-field attitude and behaviour, and act as an ambassador for the club at all times.  The Selection Committee reserves the right to consider attitude and behaviour as a factor when selecting sides.
  • The Selection Committee also expects players to act as role models to younger members for the club, and support an environment in which those younger players can develop and succeed.  The Selection Committee reserves the right to consider this as a factor when selecting sides.

Disciplinary:

  • The Selection Committee shall reserve the right to not select any player who is involved in a disciplinary procedure under the jurisdiction of the England & Wales Cricket Board, Warwickshire Cricket Board, Warwickshire Cricket League, Arden Sunday Cricket League, or any other appropriate governing body.
  • The Selection Committee also reserves the right to not select any player who is subject to an internal disciplinary procedure under the jurisdiction of Hampton & Solihull Cricket Club, and in line with the club's formal disciplinary policy.

Following the completion of the selection process the committee will endeavour to inform players of their selection via text message, email, or phone call as appropriate.  The Selection Committee will endeavour to have all players confirmed within 48 hours of the Selection Meeting.

Should any player wish to query their selection they are welcome to approach an appropriate Captain to discuss the matter.

The above guidelines form the framework that the Selection Committee will endeavour to operate within at all times, however as available playing resources vary during the course of the season, some compromises or flexibility are inevitable.
